Cette horloge fonctionne sur un rythme de 24 heures. Ce rythme synchronise entre autres les variations de temp\u00e9rature, la\u00a0production d\u2019hormones, ainsi que d\u2019autres param\u00e8tres telles que la\u00a0vigilance\u00a0ou la\u00a0m\u00e9morisation.<br \/>\nLa chronobiologie regroupe l\u2019\u00e9tude de ces rythmes\u00a0et des cons\u00e9quences de leur perturbation. C\u2019est notamment gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce rythme\u00a0circadien\u00a0((circa : \u00ab\u00a0proche de\u00a0\u00bb, dien : \u00ab\u00a0un jour\u00a0\u00bb) que nous nous endormons en fin de journ\u00e9e, que notre respiration ralentit la nuit ou que nous supportons le d\u00e9calage horaire.<br \/>\nNos organes disposent chacun de leur propre horloge interne, aussi une re-synchronisation permanente est-elle n\u00e9cessaire. Ainsi, la\u00a0m\u00e9latonine\u00a0(l\u2019hormone du sommeil) est bloqu\u00e9e par la lumi\u00e8re du jour, tandis que la nuit la lib\u00e8re. Ce qui revient \u00e0 dire que la\u00a0lumi\u00e8re favorise l\u2019\u00e9veil, et son absence entra\u00eene le sommeil. Il est toutefois important de garder une bonne alimentation m\u00eame quand il fait chaud.
